Yasin Nasser, a two-time Ugandan rally champion and the reigning Tanzanian champion, made his mark as the sole Tanzanian driver to participate in this year’s World Rally Championship Safari Kenya Rally, where he competed in the WRC2 category.
Yasin Nasser joins a prestigious list of Tanzanian legends who have also participated in the World Rally Championship, including the likes of Bert Shankland, Zully Remtulla, Nizar Jivan, Vidya D Babla, Santinder Singh Birdi, and many more.
Nasser returned to the Safari Rally with his Ford Fiesta Rally2, a vehicle that qualified him for the highly competitive and thrilling category. In the Rally2 class, he faced formidable opponents such as two-time Safari Rally category winner Kajetan Kajetanowicz from Poland and Skoda Fabia’s Oliver Solberg from Sweden. The class also featured drivers from the host nation, including Karan Patel, Carl Tundo, and Aakif Virani, among others.
Teamed up with his long-time co-driver Ali Katumba, Nasser aimed to replicate their efforts from the 2021 edition.
Unfortunately, Yasin and Ali Katumba encountered a setback when they rolled their Ford Fiesta Rally2 during SS7, the Kedong stage. Speaking to Auto magazine, Yasin Nasser explained, “In that specific spot where we rolled, there was a lot of soft soil, and the surface had become deep due to the impact of the cars. So, it created some kind of a deep hole. We didn’t anticipate anything like that and we followed our notes. It was that dip that threw us off track. We are now focused on making a comeback to continue rallying.
We extend our best wishes to the Moil Rally Team as they prepare for their upcoming events.
